Powerful images: scanning childhood brain tumours

Dr Andrew Peet is a doctor and researcher at the University of Birmingham. He splits his time between treating children with brain tumours and researching better ways to diagnose and monitor these cancers. His work will lead to more tailored treatment for children with cancer, helping to save even more lives.

Dr Peet is developing new ways to produce images of brain tumours. At the moment, doctors use techniques such as MRI scans, which can tell them about a tumour’s size and exact location. But, as Dr Peet says, ‘there’s so much more we’d like to know but we haven’t got the tools available at the moment.’

To develop these tools, Dr Peet is leading a large team of doctors and scientists who are investigating new MRI scanning techniques. They are finding better ways to diagnose brain tumours, monitor the effects of treatment, and predict how an individual child’s tumour will respond to particular drugs.

In the future, this cutting-edge research could allow doctors to select the best treatment for each child, helping to save more lives. Dr Peet’s group is collaborating with experts all over the UK, ensuring that these advances in scanning will bring benefits to as many children as possible.
