Overcoming drug resistance in lung cancer treatment
Dr Dean Fennell is a leading lung cancer specialist. He works in the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology at the Queen's University of Belfast and holds a Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist Fellowship. As well as working as a consultant he also co-ordinates laboratory studies into non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Dr Fennell uses the discoveries he makes in the lab to improve treatment for people with this disease.
Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world and it is often very hard to treat. One of the biggest obstacles for successfully treating people with the disease is resistance to chemotherapy. Dr Fennell is uncovering information that will lead to the development of new treatments to help overcome chemotherapy resistance in people with NSCLC. Because Dr Fennell is constantly treating people with lung cancer and collaborating with other researchers in the UK, and across Europe, he can ensure that any advances he makes will quickly be made available to patients with this disease.
Dr Fennell is a key member of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Clinical Studies Group for lung cancer - a group of specialists who have the responsibility of driving forwards the development of new clinical trials for people with this disease. This group has close links to researchers in the US and around Europe.
In addition, Dr Fennell works with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Lung Cancer Group, a European collaborative group dedicated to lung cancer research and clinical trials.
