Reducing blood clots in lung cancer patients
Dr Fergus Macbeth is an expert in lung cancer research and works at the Velindre Hospital in Cardiff. He is co-ordinating a clinical trial called FRAGMATIC, investigating whether the blood thinning drug Dalteparin (also called Fragmin) can reduce the number of blood clots in people with lung cancer. Blood clots are common in people with the disease and can also be a side effect of treatment. They can be very serious if they start to move through the body so it is important to find ways of preventing them.
Stopping cancer from spreading
The trial also aims to discover if Dalteparin can stop cancer cells from spreading to other parts of the body via the bloodstream. Dr Macbeth is currently recruiting over 2,000 people from around the UK. He hopes that this research will lead to better treatments for lung cancer patients in the future.
Dr Macbeth is Director of the Centre for Clinical Practice at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and is responsible for the clinical guidelines programme. He is Honorary Consultant in Oncology at University College London Hospitals, where he works part-time with the lung cancer team.
