Pioneering the treatments of the future

Professor John Gribben is a doctor and researcher at Barts and the London Trust Cancer Centre. He and his team at the Barts Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) are developing and testing new ways to treat cancer.

The Barts ECMC is one of 19 across the country funded by Cancer Research UK and the Departments of Health. The ECMCs are hubs for early-stage clinical trials, turning exciting discoveries made in the lab into new treatments for cancer.

Professor Gribben and his team are running clinical trials into pancreatic and kidney cancer that will help to develop much-needed new treatments for these diseases. And they are investigating many other types of cancer including ovarian cancer and blood cancers such as leukaemia and lymphoma.

The scientists are also helping in the search for new biomarkers to ‘flag’ the presence of certain types of cancer. These biomarkers can enable doctors to spot whether a cancer is returning or how well a treatment is working.

Professor Gribben’s work gives more patients the chance to take part in clinical trials testing the latest treatments, leading to better care and survival. And his research has the potential to provide the life-saving treatments of the future.

Professor Gribben also features in our new TV campaign.
