Improving communication and quality of life for people with cancer
Professor Lesley Fallowfield is Director of the Cancer Research UK Sussex Psychosocial Oncology Group and has been supported by the charity for over 20 years. Her work focuses on improving the quality of life for people with cancer.
She is particularly interested in improving the communication skills of doctors and other healthcare professionals who work with patients. One of her current projects is looking at ways to help doctors discuss with patients the possibility of taking part in clinical trials for new cancer treatments.
Professor Fallowfield and her team are also looking at the communication needs of people with a certain type of brain tumour, called high grade glioma. And they are carrying out a clinical trial to test whether acupuncture can relieve the side effects of radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.
