Our research in Southampton
Southampton is the home of one of our new Cancer Research UK Centres. These Cancer Centres will draw together world class research and areas of medical expertise to provide the best possible results for cancer patients nationwide.
As one of the first centres, the Southampton Cancer Research UK Centre will help set the pace for national and international progress in immunology and immunotherapy. It will focus on the biology and treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, bladder and breast cancer and cancer genetics. Professor Peter Johnson is the director of the new Centre.
Watch researchers at Southampton talk about the impact the Centre will have on cancer research locally and nationally:
We also fund the clinical trials work of the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) at the Southampton General Hospital. The group co-ordinates the care of virtually all the UK’s children with cancer, ensuring they receive the most up-to-date treatments.
Below are some of the highlights of our research in Southampton.
Bile duct cancer
Prof John Primrose
Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences
University of Southampton, Southampton
Better treatments for bile duct cancer
Professor John Primrose is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and is based at the University of Southampton. He heads up a clinical trial investigating how to improve treatment for people with cancer of the bile duct, and he is also researching treatments for bowel cancer.

Developing new cancer treatments
Professor Peter Johnson is the Cancer Research UK Chair of Medical Oncology and directs the Southampton Clinical Centre. He is also Cancer Research UK's Chief Clinician. In this role, he is helping to shape the future of our clinical research across the UK. Professor Johnson is a leading expert in lymphoma - a cancer that affects the body's white blood cells. He's also working on new treatments that use the power of the body's own immune system to attack tumours.
Prof Christian Ottensmeier
Cancer Sciences Division, School of Medicine
University of Southampton, Southampton
Cancer vaccines - harnessing the immune system to fight cancer
Professor Christian Ottensmeier and his team based at Southampton General Hospital are at the forefront of research into cancer vaccines. This novel approach to cancer treatment aims to stimulate the body's own immune system to recognise and kill the cancer cells. The technique is being tested as a treatment for cancers such as lymphoma and myeloma.
