Brain and other central nervous system (CNS) tumour statistics are presented in this section.Chart showing the latest brain and central nervous system cancer statistics

  • In the UK in 2009, 4,987 people were diagnosed with malignant brain and other CNS tumours. Also, 4,347 people were diagnosed with non-invasive brain and other CNS tumours: 3,409 of these were benign, 938 were of unknown or uncertain behaviour.
  • In 2010, malignant brain and other CNS tumours caused 3,889 deaths in the UK. There were also 995 deaths from non-invasive brain and other CNS tumours: 380 from benign tumours, and 615 from tumours of unknown or uncertain behaviour.
  • In 2005-2009, 15% of people in England survived their brain cancer for five years or more. These figures refer to Brain tumours (C71) only and not C70 and C72 or non-malignant brain tumours.
