Clear the air

Now you know that smoke is poison, it's time to get those chemicals out of your system!

Cigarette smoke is a toxic cocktail of 69 cancer-causing chemicals and hundreds of other poisons.

Reduce your exposure to these harmful chemicals by...

Giving up smoking

If you smoke, giving up smoking is the single most important way to improve your health. We know you’ve heard it all before but giving up really does make a difference.

Your body will feel the benefits immediately as your blood pressure improves, your breathing returns to normal and exercise becomes easier. After five years your risk of a heart attack will have fallen to half that of a smoker. And after ten years your risk of lung cancer will have halved too.

For techniques and tips on how to give up take a look at our giving up smoking page.

Going smokefree

Where there’s smoke there’s poison. And that includes other people’s cigarette smoke. Second-hand smoke kills thousands of people in the UK every year.

So Cancer Research UK welcomes the smokefree legislation that is being introduced in England in Summer 2007. Over the next year the whole of the UK will be going smokefree in enclosed public places. This is a big step towards improving everyone’s health.

Find out more about clearing the air in public places and the home on our going smokefree page.
