Smokefree England
Cancer Research UK’s reaction to the smokefree legislation in England.
Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said: "No more stinging eyes as you enter a pub. Gone will be the smell of smoke on our clothes at the end of an evening. And crucially, an end to the health risks for bar workers.
"This is a monumental day for public health. England is now smokefree, making the UK one of the biggest countries in the world that is smokefree.
"This new law will bring about some of the most significant public health improvements the country has seen in decades, and save tens of thousands of lives.
"We know that the majority of smokers want to give up and this is an ideal opportunity to stop smoking for good."
