Volunteers are essential to Cancer Research UK's success.
Without them we could not run our chain of around 650 high street shops. Volunteers' fundraising efforts in local communities account for approximately £20 million of our annual income.
Volunteering and community participation has rightly featured on the agendas of all the main political parties in recent years. Volunteering rates are low and falling among young adults, and so the promotion of volunteering to this age-group is particularly important. Government should introduce further fiscal and other reward measures to encourage businesses to allow and promote volunteering by their staff.
