Name: FSA Signpost Labelling Consultation
Source: Food Standards Agency
Date: April 2005
Cancer Research UK responded to the latest national FSA consultation on food labelling.
The FSA have been carrying our consumer research to examine what form of signposting consumers find most helpful. The consultation asked for input into that process.
Cancer Research UK's response stressed support for the development of a coherent labelling scheme, which we believe will help people make more informed food choices.
We highlighted a preference for a clear, visual message, to be displayed on the front of packaged foodstuffs, in order that the scheme achieves maximum impact and is utilised by as many people as possible.
Our response also stressed the likely impact a signpost food-labelling scheme would have on the food industry. We believe it would provide an opportunity to encourage product reformulation by giving an incentive to food companies to conform to healthy standards to achieve a desired symbol for their products. Evidence from the ‘pick the tick’ initiative in Australia and New Zealand supports this belief.
