The biological effects of ultraviolet radiation relevant to health with particular reference to sunbeds for cosmetic purposes

Name: The biological effects of ultraviolet radiation relevant to health with particular reference to sunbeds for cosmetic purposes

In December 2005, the SCCP published a preliminary opinion on the Biological effects of ultraviolet radiation relevant to health with particular reference to sunbeds for cosmetic purposes.

They noted that whilst the main source of exposure to ultraviolet radiation is the sun, for some people substantial exposure comes from artificial sources including sunbeds for cosmetic purposes. The report made some suggestions for action to discourage individuals from using sunbeds and sought views from interested parties.

Cancer Research UK responded to the consultation, welcoming the publication of the Preliminary Opinion and the opportunity to comment on the Opinion’s findings.

Our response supports the key finding that the use of sunbeds for cosmetic tanning is likely to increase the risk of malignant melanoma, and people with known risk factors for skin cancer should be advised against sunbed use.
