Cancer Research UK scientists.Research is critical to improving our understanding of the causes of cancer and without this advances in prevention, screening and treatment would not be possible.

The UK has an enviable global reputation for scientific research. Government has an important role to play in maintaining and promoting the UK's position at the forefront of science. This requires adequate funding and a supportive legislative environment to conduct research and promote its translation to public benefit.

Looking to the future of science in the UK, investment must be made in new young scientists through a commitment to scientific education and training in schools and universities. The support of the public for scientific advance is also crucial for maintaining the progress seen in recent years.
