Briefings: cancer treatment and clinical issues

Prof David Neal, Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Cambridge and Cancer Research UK grantee.

As research intro the causes and treatment of cancer improves, better therapies are becoming available. With these advances more patients are surviving cancer.

However, for some cancers, survival figures in the UK still appear to lag behind many comparable EU nations. It is therefore essential that increases in knowledge are transferred into clinical practice in the shortest possible time.

To achieve this we must continue to work to ensure that there is sufficient support for clinical research within the NHS. Decision-making about treatments for patients should be based on the best available clinical evidence. As a result, all patients would have the potential to access to the best possible treatments, regardless of where in the country they live.
