Promoting volunteering

Volunteers make a vital contribution to Cancer Research UK. In total, we work with over 45,000 volunteers in a diverse range of roles including Council members, interns, fundraisers, event volunteers and over 14,500 people helping in our 600 shops across the UK.

In September 2007 we responded to a Government consultation on volunteers and the national minimum wage. You can read our response.

Volunteering and community participation has rightly featured on the agendas of all the main political parties in recent years. Volunteering rates are low and falling among young adults, and so the promotion of volunteering to this age-group is particularly important. We believe that the Government should introduce further fiscal and other reward measures to encourage businesses to allow and promote volunteering by their staff, and to promote volunteering to the public clearly and effectively.
