Wales has some of the highest instances of cancer in the UK and indeed Europe. Much of this is connected with the relatively high levels of deprivation found in Wales.
We work with the 60 AMs from the five political parties in the Assembly, advising them on health policy and developments in cancer research.
We want to ensure that cancer remains one of the main health priorities for the Welsh Assembly Government. One of the ways we help do this is by running the annual Wales Cancer conference. This brings together politicians, doctors, nurses, scientists and patients to discuss cancer issues.
Assembly Members of all parties support our events in both the National Assembly and in their constituencies. In addition, we provide the Secretariat to the All Party Group on Cancer, which meets regularly to hear from cancer experts. And we produce a regular Assembly Newsletter.
We campaign to influence legislation in Wales. We have been actively supporting the Assembly in its bid to gain the powers it needs to make all workplaces and enclosed public places in Wales smokefree. We believe a smokefree law for Wales, like the successful one introduced in Ireland, would protect all workers from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and help smokers to quit.
