John Denham MP dons a lab coat at Southampton

John Denham MP said: "This has been a great opportunity to learn about the innovative cancer research that is being carried out in Southampton. It highlights the importance of science and its potential to make a great impact for cancer patients in the future."

"Without the work of the dedicated scientists, clinicians and support staff, the advances made in cancer treatment and services could not be achieved. CR-UK funds research all over the UK and I'm delighted to support this life-saving work."

The Southampton CR-UK Centre has been awarded funding from CR-UK and the Department of Health to become one of 19 Centres for Experimental Cancer Medicine in the UK. The support will underpin the work needed to fast-track pioneering new treatments and ways of diagnosing cancer from 'bench-to-bedside'.

Professor Johnson said: "I am really pleased that John Denham MP has been able to visit the Cancer Research UK Centre at Southampton Hospital to gain a first hand insight into the work we undertake."

"I am proud of the research that we carry out in Southampton. The main focus of our work is applying our understanding of the immune system to the design and testing of new types of treatment for cancer. We are extremely appreciative of the backing of our supporters who fund our work and help improve treatment and survival."
