Politicians met scientists at Cancer Research UK research institutes to learn more about our research work and to raise awareness of the importance of science in our lives. The visits were organised as part of National Science and Engineering Week (7th-16th March) which aims to celebrate science, engineering and technology.
Ian Pearson MP, Minister of Science and Innovation is the first Minister to visit the Cambridge Research Institute (CRI). Ian met with Professor Sir Bruce Ponder, Director of the CRI, and gained an insight into one of the largest cancer research facilities in Europe.
Cancer Research UK funds over £20 million at the CRI which houses more then 300 scientists in around thirty research groups.
The CRI is based on the Addenbrooke’s Hospital site, where every year over 4,000 cancer patients pass through its doors. Being located on the site of a major cancer hospital helps to ensure laboratory advances are translated into tangible benefits for patients as quickly as possible.
Rob Wilson MP, Conservative Shadow Higher Education Minister, visited the London Research Institute (LRI) at Lincoln’s Inn Fields and spoke to Professor Richard Treisman, Director of the LRI, about the institute’s current research.
The work of the institute aims to understand how normal cells in the body become cancers and is being carried out by the institute’s 46 research teams and 550 staff. This knowledge will provide the foundation for developing new and more effective ways of preventing and treating cancer.
Fiona Hall, Liberal Democrat MEP for North East England, attended a lab tour at the Northern Institute of Cancer Research (NICR). Professor Herbie Newell, Cancer Research UK’s Executive Director of Clinical and Translational Research, presented the research highlights of the NICR and showcased the work that is being achieved in prostate cancer and leukaemia.
