Achieving early presentation
On this page you can find out about NAEDI work stream 1, and some of its activities.
Work stream 1 aims to achieve earlier (and more appropriate) presentation of potential cancer patients with symptoms to primary care. It focuses on interaction with members of the public up to the point of presentation.
Activity within this work stream is diverse, and includes:
- Increasing public awareness of cancer signs and symptoms/seriousness
- Overcoming barriers to presentation and improving user experience
The work stream is chaired by Sarah Lyness, Executive Director of Communications and Information at Cancer Research UK, and co-chaired by Jane Allberry, Deputy Director of Cancer Services, End of Life Care and Dermatology at the Department of Health.

Cancer Networks and PCTs across the country have been getting cancer on the local agenda and promoting awareness and early diagnosis through interventions, services and service change. Read more on our local activity-getting results pages.

Cancer Research UK and the Department of Health undertook qualitative research with cancer patients, the general public (segmented using DH's Healthy Foundations model) and general practitioners. The research provides useful insight in a number of areas including:
- Attitudes to cancer
- Barriers to, and promoters of, presentation
- Responses to a number of different messaging 'territories'
It will be of interest to anyone looking to promote awareness and early diagnosis.
Segment specific reports from the NAEDI 'Insight' research:
- 'Over 50s, C2DE'
- 'Live for Todays'
- 'Unconfident fatalists'
- 'Balanced compensators'
- 'Health Conscious Realists'
- 'Hedonistic Immortals'
The Department of Health has coordinated groups of experts and stakeholders to agree on the key signs and symptoms for specific cancer types, to help ensure that clear and consistent messages are promoted to the public. So far, key messages for breast, bowel, lung, prostate, ovarian (public and health professional) and cervical cancer have been developed.
We encourage you to use the key messages developed so far in your awareness-raising activities. They have no copyright and can be used and branded as required.
