The National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative (NAEDI)

Doctor looking at resultsThe National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative - NAEDI - was first announced in the Cancer Reform Strategy and is a public sector/third sector partnership led by Mike Richards, National Cancer Director, and Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research UK.

The role of NAEDI is to co-ordinate and provide support to activities that promote the earlier diagnosis of cancer.

NAEDI works across nine diverse areas of activity:

  • Measuring public awareness of cancer - Interested in using the Cancer Awareness Measure?
  • Promoting earlier presentation
  • Reducing delays in primary care
  • Developing key messages (generic and cancer-specific)
  • Reviewing the evidence base
  • Making international comparisons to further understand reasons for survival differences
  • New research
  • Diagnostics, including access to existing diagnostics and research and evaluation of novel diagnostic techniques
  • Health economics
