Interventions, services and service change: public awareness
Cancer Networks and PCTs have developed social marketing interventions and community projects to raise awareness of cancer and encourage earlier presentation and have introduced new services and service improvements in primary care.

NHS Doncaster developed a striking social marketing campaign to increase early detection of lung cancer. As well as targeting the group worst affected by the disease - men over 50 - they worked with local health professionals to ensure that patients would receive appropriate referral and tests.

Lancs and South Cumbria awareness training for frontline staff
Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network are developing a training resource for frontline workers, such as social care assistants, receptionists and health trainers, who have one to one contact with the public. The resource, which will be finalised in Spring 2011, will offer information about the symptoms of cancer and where to go for help, and training in the skills needed to talk confidently about it.
