Tiny particles, much smaller than cells, which usually consist only of a DNAgenome and protein coat. They infect host cells and multiply rapidly once inside, causing disease. Many common diseases, such as the common cold, warts and 'flu are caused by viruses. Some, such as a few strains of human papillomavirus are linked to cancer.
