DNA damage and repair - A to Z
This page contains links to content about DNA damage and repair.
All our cells contain DNA, which contains the cell's instructions in the form of genes. But our DNA is continually being damaged by the processes that go on within cells, and by things such as ultraviolet radiation from the sun or the chemicals in tobacco smoke.
Most of the time this damage is effectively repaired. But over time, mistakes (mutations) build up in our DNA. If these mistakes occur in important genes involved in cell growth, then the cell can start to multiply out of control, leading to cancer.
