Tests for a specific gene or genes (such as the BRCA genes) have been available for some time, and doctors generally offer them to families with a very strong history of cancer.

Increasingly, ‘whole genome’ tests are becoming commercially available. However, our knowledge of cancer genetics is not yet comprehensive enough for doctors and the general public to use these to reliably predict individual cancer risk.
