Vaginal cancer

The cervix, vulva and vaginaVaginal cancer is very rare in the UK, with about 250 cases diagnosed each year. Survival rates have improved since the 1970s.

The most important risk factor for vaginal cancer is age. Most women who get this type of cancer are over 60, and it is very rare in women under 40. Women with certain infections, including human papilloma virus (HPV) or HIV, are also more likely to get vaginal cancer.

Cancer Research UK is funding research into different aspects of vaginal cancer, including developing new treatments for the disease and improving existing ones. For example, we are funding a clinical trial that is looking at ways to reduce the side-effects caused by radiotherapy to the pelvis.
