Vulval cancer - A to Z

The cervix, vulva and vaginaThis page links to content about vulval cancer.

Cancer of the vulva (external female sex organs) is not common in the UK. Around 1,100 women are diagnosed with the disease each year, and this type of cancer is highly treatable if it is found at an early stage.

Most women who get vulval cancer are over 60, although a treatable pre-cancerous condition called VIN can be found in younger women. We also know that infections including human papilloma virus (HPV), genital herpes and HIV can increase the risk of vulval cancer.
