Vulval cancer

The cervix, vulva and vaginaCancer of the vulva (external female sex organs) is not common in the UK. Around 1,000 women are diagnosed with the disease each year, and this type of cancer is highly treatable if it is found at an early stage.

Most women who get vulval cancer are over 60, although a treatable pre-cancerous condition called VIN can be found in younger women. We also know that infections including human papilloma virus (HPV), genital herpes and HIV can increase the risk of vulval cancer.

Cancer Research UK is funding research into different aspects of vulval cancer, including ways to prevent the disease and improve treatment. For example, we are funding a clinical trial aiming to find the best way to treat VIN, which can develop into vulval cancer.
