Cancer Research UK's manifesto

Manifesto coverHow can you help us beat cancer?

Cancer Research UK has produced 'How can you help us beat cancer?', a document setting out our proposals for the political parties about cancer and science. With concerted action, we could make cancer outcomes for British patients among the best in Europe within a decade. Our manifesto calls are:

  • More must be done to prevent cancer
  • Cancers must be diagnosed and treated earlier
  • Patients must have timely access to world-class treatments
  • Cancer inequalities must be tackled
  • Our position at the forefront of medical research must be protected

We would like MPs and those standing for Parliament to sign the cancer commitment.

We are interested in your thoughts about these proposals. Please send your comments to publicaffairs@cancer.org.uk

New campaigning guide launched by Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK has launched a new pocket-book guide, ‘How to campaign with confidence about cancer’.

As a political issue, cancer may come up in many areas of the UK during campaigning. The guide aims to help all those involved in political campaigning by providing them with simple, clear information about the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer when they talk to members of the public.

The guide contains:

  • a simple description of cancer and its causes;
  • advice on lifestyle choices that prevent cancer;
  • statistics about who is affected by cancer;
  • recent cancer survival rates data;
  • an explanation of the importance of awareness and early diagnosis in improving cancer survival rates;
  • an introduction to the three most established treatments of cancer;
  • an outline of the research currently being undertaken to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, and the progress that has been made so far;
  • useful scientific perspectives on sometimes controversial issues;
  • key developments that have been made in cancer policy, and information about England’s cancer spending;
  • a helpful summary of the organisational structure of England’s cancer services;
  • a statement of Cancer Research UK’s policy goal for the next general election: to make the UK’s cancer outcomes among the best in Europe in the next ten years;
  • useful contact details.

Cancer Research UK received an excellent response to the guide at the party conferences, and copies have been sent to serving MPs and prospective parliamentary candidates.

Cancer Research UK hopes this guide will be a useful aid in conversations with members of the public and on the doorsteps of the campaign trail.
