Langerhans' immune cells

Type of immune systemcell found in the skin and other areas of the body, including the lining of the cervix.

Laparoscopy

A small operation where a flexible tube filled with optical fibres (a laparoscope) is put inside the body through a small cut, usually in the abdomen (tummy). The doctor can look through the laparoscope, see inside the body and take tissue samples (biopsies).

Large bowel

Part of the digestive system below the stomach; includes the colon, rectum and anus.

Large bowel cancer

Large intestine

Made up of the caecum, colon and rectum.

Larynx

Hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and containing the vocal cords.
