Also nevi, singular - naevus. Medical name for a mole or moles.

Nasopharynx

Area of the upper throat behind the nose.

National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE)

Agency of the National Health Service in the UK. Set up in 1999 to put an end to the so called 'postcode lottery' system of healthcare in England and Wales, where the availablility of treatments depended upon which NHS Trust area you lived in. Publishes clinical appraisals of whether particular treatments should be available on the NHS based upon their cost effectiveness.

National screening programme

Organised programme of cancer detection or prevention run by the government or National Health Service. In the UK, there are screening programmes for breast and cervical cancers; a bowel cancer screening programme will be launched in April 2006.
