Meet our young supporters

In 2006/7 we spent over £315 million on cancer research. And its all thanks to the 1000’s of people in the UK who donate their time or money to Cancer Research UK, or take part in our sponsored events.

People of all ages are helping us to raise money for research. We’ve chosen just a few of our young supporters from around the country and asked them to tell us more about why they raise money for Cancer Research UK.

A head for heights

Seventeen year-old Kerry Simmons from Kent took part in a sponsored abseil down a 200ft building. Kerry was one of over 100 people who took part in Miller House Abseil in Maidstone on the 9th and 10th of October, 2004.

Kerry explained her reasons for taking part in this event, “I have a very close family friend who is still getting over the effects of cancer and I feel strongly about raising money towards research into the disease”.

Over £20,000 was pledged from this event.

Dining out for charity

Nathan Bancroft from South Wales recently served up a four course charity dinner, raising £350. Nathan, aged 18, is studying Advanced Food and Preparation at Coleg Gwent (Gwent College).

The dinner was a great success and Nathan said, “Everyone enjoyed the evening very much, especially as they were able to raise money for Cancer Research UK in the process”.

Nathan is planning similar events in the future, so book now!

Happy shopping

Sophie Juras-Watson, aged 15, has been volunteering in her local Cancer Research UK shop in Bromley since she was only ten years old. Sophie says “I know people who have been affected by cancer, so in my opinion it is one of the worthiest causes.”

Sophie helps in the shop every Saturday and during the school holidays. Sophie says she volunteers, “because so many people are affected by cancer, so the more that can be done to help treat and cure it the better.” Sophie received a “Local Hero” award from a local newspaper in recognition of all her hard work.
